Nobby State School Celebrates 120 years Nobby State School is turning 120 years old on 11 November and the school is getting ready for a big party to celebrate! The school opened in 1897 and since then has served the community of Nobby and surrounds, educating generations of locals. One of the most noticeable features of the school is the picturesque grounds on which the school sits and the magnificent memorial gates that serve as the entrance to the school. The gates were designed as a memorial to those served our country in World War I and World War II. Made with sandstone columns that hold an arch, you can see the names engraved of World War One veterans who were former students of the school. During the school’s golden jubilee celebrations in 1947, the gate was unveiled and they’re preparing to celebrate all over again this November as the school commemorates 120 years. The celebration will be held on Remembrance Day, Saturday 11 November from 10.30am. The birthday party will start with a Remembrance Day service, followed by a day of celebration, including a giant cake. A time capsule, created by current students will be a big feature of the day. Past and present students, locals and visitors are all invited to help celebrate history in the making. To find out how you can get involved, call Nobby State School on 4696 3233. Clifton Dabblers inspires creativity and friendship The Toowoomba Region is a creative part of the country and the community of Clifton, in our region’s south, has become a mini-haven for artists. In this edition of BOLD, we meet with the Clifton Dabblers, a group of men and women who come together to create art and forge friendships. The Clifton Dabblers started in 2010 and have grown from just a few enthusiastic locals to nearly fifty members. They’re certainly a creative bunch. From art pieces for the library, to the giant memorial tree at Rudd’s Corner, the Dabblers have splashed their creativity all over the town. “We do amazing mosaics, printing, pottery, embroidery, crocheting and knitting” Dabblers President, Wendy Cassar said. “For many of us, this is a 12 Clifton Dabblers real outlet and a chance for women and men to inspire each other and form friendships that will last a lifetime.” The Dabblers meet weekly at Clifton’s old fire station, now dubbed the Dabblers Den. Step inside and you’ll see that the walls of the space are covered with examples of the members’ work. Members range from newbies to established artists who sell some of their work overseas. “Everyone loves coming here. We all have a good chat and then get stuck into our projects. Many of us share our skills around and teach each other. Dabblers always help out other Dabblers!” If you see something you like, you’re in luck, as the hand painted silk scarves, paintings and colourful mosaics adorn every inch and can be purchased seven days a week. The group meet every Monday from 10am. If you’re interested in joining the Dabblers, call Rhonda Glare on 4612 3201. www.tr.qld.gov.au/bold l bold
