CONTENTS 4 welcome back Summer and the festive season really is such a special part of the year as we take the time to come together and celebrate all that we hold dear. Overall, 2016 has been a great year for our region and I want to thank everyone for contributing so much to the community and for their enthusiasm and passion for this place we all call home. It’s always heartening to see so many charities go into full swing at this time to make sure every member of our community experiences the joy of Christmas. As the year winds down and we step out to Christmas parties and summer barbeques, we are reminded that we live in such a wonderful, peaceful, part of the world. Not all around the world are so fortunate, and we spare a thought for those who are faced with turmoil and fear in their towns and cities this Christmas. Of course, sometimes that turmoil and fear does exist, but behind closed doors in our region. We need to be ever vigilant about supporting those affected by domestic violence and speaking out to eliminate this terrible scourge on our society. Shout out to our farmers 5 Here at Council, there is still plenty happening as the year draws to a close. The pages that follow in this the second edition of BOLD highlight just how vibrant our region is. Our signature event, the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers was another fantastic success – thanks to everyone who contributed in some way. Our title as one of Australia’s most productive agricultural regions is a real badge of honour and opportunity and I believe will continue to underpin our success in the years ahead, just as it has in the past. There’s also information inside about opportunities to stay active through Council’s CHANGE project-this being a perfect time of year to focus on health and fitness. Olive tree farming 6 Speaking of our vibrant region, Council’s event register continues to grow and there is more information in the pages that follow about how to get the most from this handy reservoir of information and entertainment. The various Christmas and New Year’s Eve events throughout the region are sure to be great celebrations, and I encourage as many of you as possible to join the fun. Thank you to the residents who have taken the time to share their feedback on the first edition of BOLD - we’ve made some design changes and included more of the information you said you wanted to see included. Highfields Sports and Recreation Park On behalf of my Council colleagues and the staff of Toowoomba Regional Council I wish each and every one of you a very happy and peace-filled Christmas and all the very best for the year ahead. We look forward to another great year in the Toowoomba Region, building on our rich traditions and bold ambitions! 10 Cr Paul Antonio MAYOR, CHAIR - ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE Mayor Paul Antonio Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers 12 P 07 4688 6433 F 07 4631 9170 M 0429 954 109 E [email protected] councillors Cr Carol Taylor DEPUTY MAYOR, CHAIR - INFRASTRUCTURE COMMITTEE P 07 4688 6615 F 07 4631 9158 M 0417 723 948 E [email protected] Cr Nancy Sommerfield 10 things to do in Oakey CHAIR - WATER & WASTE COMMITTEE P 07 4688 6605 F 07 4631 9158 M 0499 774 278 E [email protected] Cr Geoff McDonald CHAIR - ENVIRONMENT & COMMUNITY COMMITTEE 15 P 07 4688 6784 F 07 4631 9158 M 0499 774 276 E [email protected] Seniors event calendar 2 www.tr.qld.gov.au/bold BOLD.
