Jan 7th Bugga Doran Bugga village attacked/
massacred. According to one local government official as many as 2,000 people
were killed (Julian Rademeyer and Eleanor
Whitehead, Jan 2015, pg 1) In January 2015
news went viral about a picture sent out over
the Internet. Reports that dozens, hundreds or possibly as many as 2,000 people
had been massacred in Boko Haram attacks
centered on the northern Nigerian town of
Baga and surrounding villages (Kate Wilkinson and Julian Rademeyer, July 2014, pg 1).
However, the famous picture of the Buga
massacre is actually a oil tanker explosion
that killed some 200 people in the democratic republic of Congo. This statement is true.
Boko Haram captured an area the size of Sudan (President Johnathan says they hold no
property). Boko Haram’s efforts to establish
an Islamic state or caliphate in north-eastern
Nigeria gained momentum in July 2014 with
a rapid advance through and around the territory in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states.
By January 2015, the group had pushed
out government forces and controlled four
towns in Borno and Yobe states – Gwoza,
Bama, Baga, and Gulani – an area spanning
about 51,800 km² (Ben Ezeamalu, February
2016, pg 1). This statement is true.
Boko Haram might take hold of Nigeria’s oil,
the tenth biggest oil base on earth. As far
as anyone knows, oil is not in Boko Haram’s
future plans for the moment, not to mention
they don’t control territory anywhere close
to where the oil rigs
