Fact Check 27 #1 #2 #3 #4 Reports state that 276+ schoolgirls were kidnapped by Boko Haram, but that number is not an exact count. When actually it was a total of 360 girls were kidnapped, 530 were registered for the exam they were taking that day, 70 were external, 70 were boys and 30 girls staying off campus. (Abubakar, 2014) This statement is false. Goodluck Jonathan, Nigerian president at the time of schoolgirl kidnappings, failed to recover the girls. (Okasi, 2015) According to NBC news, the president would not even go and visit the parents of the missing girls, and even canceled a trip to the state. (Neely, 2014) This statement is true. The Nigerian government is ignoring the missing schoolgirls and nothing is being done to hold the government accountable. At the time of the kidnappings, the president, Goodluck Jonathan did and said nothing. It wasn’t until hashtag #bringbackourgirls was created and there was extreme international pressure that he reacted and spoke on the issue. (Ibukun, 2014) This statement is true. Boko Haram is taking a new approach to their attacks. Instead of a more Guerrilla like manner they are steering more towards ISIS in an attempt to gain territory. (Ezeamalu, 2016) This statement is true. 28
