School Of Nursing Students And Faculty Give
Back To The Community Through Service
Boise State University School of Nursing students and faculty demonstrated the spirit of philanthropy and comradeship in the community throughout the 2012-2013 academic year. From volunteering
to organizing events, members of the Student Nursing Association (SNA) and other School of Nursing students and faculty, were indefatigable in their commitment to the community and the nursing
profession.
The SNA sponsored a diaper drive during multiple semesters at the School of Nursing for the Saint
Alphonsus Family Center’s Culturally Appropriate Resources and Education (CARE) Maternal and
Child Health Program. The program provides refugee families with health care and allows for the purchase of diapers and other baby supplies through a system of earned educational points. Overall, the
SNA delivered more than 900 diapers to the program.
In addition to the SNA’s service to the community, students and faculty from the Child and Family Nursing class volunteered at Saint Alphonsus’ 11th annual Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Graduate
Anniversary celebration. Boise State volunteers helped with family registration services and entertained
little ones by playing games with them while graduates from the neonatal care unit visited with hospital personnel.
In the spring semester, community health and leadership nursing students and faculty members
partnered with the Idaho Immunization Coalition to develop and coordinate meningitis immunization clinics at Boise State and other Idaho college campuses. The combined efforts of Boise State and
community volunteers during the 2013 Meningitis Campaign resulted in more than 400 vaccines
administered free to college students.
Other SNA Activities:
• Student members grabbed their rakes to serve the community at Rake Up Boise
• Volunteers celebrated Thanksgiving by serving dinner at the Boise Rescue Mission’s Thanksgiving Dinner
• The SNA organized the Health Science Career Enhancement Fair for Boise State nursing students to learn more about local potential employers
• Members walked in the March of Dimes, and helped with event set-up and clean-up
• Representatives went to the National Student Nurses Association Convention in Charlotte,
N.C., to learn more about student involvement and leadership
