The story of
Boiled Beans
Once upon a time, in a land not so far away,
there came a Raja, who, to be honest, was
quite lost. He chanced upon a village
woman who sat outside her gudi salu
boiling beans. The hunger-stricken
directionless Raja felt his stomach rumble.
Tired and exhausted, but mostly
desperate, he approached the kind woman
with all humility and said, “Swalpa bende
kalu kodthira?” The woman didn’t think
twice before offering her only meal of the
day: all the boiled beans. Impressed,
satisfied and extremely full, the Raja decided
to name this village (which already had a
name, by the way) Bendakaluru, in other
words, Boiled Beans.
