2020 년 2월에는 경제활동 참가율이 63.4 % 로 집계됐지만 2022 년 11월에는 62.1 % 로 나타나 노동 수급이 타이트한 상황이 지속될 것으로 전망된다 . 이 노동시장 불균형은 빠르게 해소되 기는 어렵기 때문에 임금이 올라가면서 서비스 물가가 동반 상승할 가능성이 높다 .

뷰티업계도 마찬가지다 . 정부가 대대적으로 실업급여를 포함한 각종 정부 부조를 지원하면 서 ‘ 일할 사람 찾기 ’ 는 어려워졌다 . 소매점 사장님들은 여러 루트를 통해 구인을 하고 있지만 쉽지 않은 상황이다 . 정부의 대대적인 지원이 끝나면 다시 일터로 돌아올 거라 예상했던 직 원들의 상당수가 떠났다 .

팬데믹 기간 직장을 떠나거나 파트타임으로 전환을 요청한 근로자들은 코로나 감염에 대한 우려도 있었지만 기존에 받던 급여보다 더 많은 실업급여를 수령하면서 직장에 대한 큰 수 요를 느끼지 못했다 .

한 뷰티서플라이에서 일했던 직원은 기존 풀타임에서 파트타임으로 전환하면서 업무시간이 줄었다는 사유로 팬데믹 기간 실업급여를 수령했고 , 한 주에 연방 지원금 600불에 주정부 지 원금 300불까지 더해져 900불을 받으면서 상대적으로 여유로워진 시간과 경제상황을 바탕 으로 평소하고 싶었던 공부를 하고 최근 조건이 좀 더 좋은 직장으로 이직했다 .

최저 임금 오름세 , 고용주 부담 늘었다

최저임금도 오르는 추세다 . 연방 정부는 앞서 2025년까지 점진적으로 임금 수준을 최소 15 달러까지 올리겠다고 밝힌 바 있다 . 캘리포니아의 최저임금은 2022년 15달러였고 2023년 15.50 달러로 올랐다 . 워싱턴 DC는 16.10 이며 하반기 한차례 더 상승을 예고했다 . 매사추세 츠는1 월 1일부터 최저 임금을 15불로 인상했고 코네티컷도 6월 1일부터 오른다 . 고용주의 부 담이 점점 더 높아진다는 뜻이다 .
