2 . 지난 우드사이드 사옥이 밀레니엄 시대를 열었던 곳이죠 . 위치도 좋았는데 , 이전한 이유가 궁금합니다 .
뉴욕 우드사이드 사옥은 ‘ 뉴지구 ’ 의 시작이자 할렘 125 브랜드의 탄생지로 저 희에게도 의미가 있는데요 . 오래전 설계해서 창고 물류 , 오더 픽업 , 로딩 등에 불편함이 있었어요 . 좋은 차에 낡은 엔진을 단 격이랄까요 , 위치는 좋았지만 물류 창고로는 적합하지 않았죠 . 5만7 천 스퀘어피트 3층 건물의 1 , 2층을 물 류창고로 썼는데 현대화에 맞지 않아 픽업 , 셋업 , 포장까지 여러 단계를 거쳐 야 했고 인력 운용도 원활하지 않았어요 . 고객분들에게도 주문에서 배송까 지 딜레이가 많아서 죄송했는데 , 이전하면서 그런 점을 개선하게 됐습니다 .
3 . 이전을 오래전부터 계획하셨던 거네요 ?
사실 코로나 이전부터 계획하고 있었어요 . 적합한 건물을 알아보던 중 코로 나가 발생해서 보류했던 거고요 . 이번에 옮기면서 적합한 시기인가 하는 질 문은 스스로도 했었죠 . 연말이라 이사도 힘들고 , 가뜩이나 경기가 좋지 않다 고 해서 부담감이 컸거든요 . 건물 매입부터 이사비 , 시스템 설립 등 모든 과정 에 비용이 많이 드니까요 . 그런데 한편으로는 오히려 이때 옮기기를 잘했다 는 생각이 들더라고요 . 비수기에 환경을 정비하고 , 다시 경기가 좋아지면 업 그레이드한 시설들이 두 배의 효과를 내겠죠 . a warehouse . We used the first and second floors of a 57,000 sq . ft . three-story building , but the facility was not suitable for modernization that was necessary to streamline pickup , setup , and packaging processes not to mention human resource management . We had many instances to say sorry to our customers who experienced delayed delivery of orders , and the new location solves this problem .
3 . It sounds like the moving was planned all along .
Indeed , we had a plan even before the Covid-19 pandemic . We were looking for a suitable building but had to pause the search due to the pandemic . When we finally made the move , we asked ourselves if this was the right time . The logistics were difficult due to the holidays , and the economic downturn generated a lot of pressure for us . From real property purchase to moving expenses and building a system , it costs an arm and a leg . On the other hand , we felt it was a good time to move . If you upgrade the facility during off-season and wait , they should generate twice the expected output during the economic boom .
In business , staying put means going backward . I believe you can turn a crisis into an opportunity as long as you keep challenging yourself .
사업에서 안주는 곧 퇴보잖아요 . 늘 도전적으로 앞서가면 전화위복이 될 거 라고 긍정적으로 생각하고 있습니다 .
4 . 이전으로 인한 변화나 특히 기대되는 점이라면 어떤 게 있을까요 ?
가장 크게 달라진 점은 역시 고객 서비스 부분입니다 . 전에는 주문에서 배송 까지의 과정이 복잡하고 오래 걸렸어요 . 창고 공간도 부족하고 열악한 편이 었고요 . 신사옥 설계는 빠른 서비스에 중점을 뒀습니다 . 이전에는 손님이 아 이템 10개를 주문하면 주문서를 확인해가며 일일이 다 손으로 포장하던 방 식이었는데 , 지금은 바코드 스캔으로 처리하고 WMS 프로그램을 도입해서 오더 진행과 픽업 , 패킹 , 쉬핑까지의 전 과정을 하나의 시스템으로 전산화해 서 오차도 줄이고 빨라졌어요 .

더불어 직원들의 근무 환경도 나아졌죠 . 예전에는 물건을 직접 옮겨야 했는 데 , 지금은 컨베이어벨트를 깔고 자동화해서 수고를 대폭 줄였어요 .
5 . 도약할 준비를 갖춘 셈이네요 . 뉴지구는 ‘ 히트상품 제조기 ’ 란 명성 이 있을 만큼 제품 개발이 활발한 업체로 꼽혀왔는데 , 한동안 다소 주 춤했던 면이 있어요 .
코로나 기간에 중국이나 인도네시아가 봉쇄되면서 애로사항이 있었어요 . 그 전에는 제가 1년에 보통 대여섯 번 , 두 달 간격으로 출장을 다녔거든요 . 저랑 직원들이 번갈아 나갔으니 거의 매달 나가는 셈이었죠 . 그런데 공장 방문이 전혀 안되니까 제품 개발을 제대로 할 수가 없었어요 . 이제는 방역도 풀렸고 이전해서 환경도 나아졌으니 다시 뛸 준비를 해야죠 .
6 . 40년 역사의 새 출발이네요 . 대표님이 뉴지구에 몸담으신 지도 꽤 되셨지요 ? 창업주인 홍종철 회장님에서 김현준 사장님으로 , 빠른 승 계가 화제가 되기도 했었는데요 .
1983 년에 지구사가 설립되고 제가 93년에 입사를 했어요 . 회장님께 인수인 계를 겸한 실무를 배우고 2006 년에 사장 취임을 했고요 . 아마도 업계에서 1 세대에서 2세대로 승계가 가장 빠른 회사였을 겁니다 . 저도 뉴지구와 연을 맺 은 지 올해로 30년 , 경영인으로는 17 년차가 됩니다 .
7 . 당시 뉴지구는 이민 1세대의 노련함과 1.5 세대의 참신함이 어우러져
4 . Do you have any change or expected change after the move ?
The biggest change is customer service . We certainly had a complex and long process from order to delivery . We had insufficient and inefficient storage space . The new building design is focused on fast service . Previously , when a customer orders 10 items , an employee would check each item on the order sheet and pack the items manually , but now along with barcode scanners , our WMS integrates and facilitates every step of the order progress from pickup , packing , and shipping , reducing errors and increasing speed .
Of course , our employees have a better work environment . They used to carry items by hand , but the new automated system uses conveyor belts to reduce the labor significantly .
5 . You are now ready for a leap . New Jigu once had the reputation of being a hit maker for its robust new product development , but it seems you guys have lost momentum .
