KING
OF
THE COURT
THE JOURNEY OF
WILLIS MACKEY JR.
W
illis Mackey Jr. is a Grand Bahama native who initially grew up playing
baseball. It was his first love until he began playing basketball during
his high school years at Christchurch School in Virginia. A season
ending injury during his sophomore year took him out of the game until his
senior year. His return to the court required rigorous training to develop his
skills and he embraced each game with vigor, proving he could have a future
career in basketball.
Willis’ tertiary educational journey led him to the University of Northwestern
Ohio (Home of the Racers), where he averaged 18 ppg and 10 rbp. Throughout
college, he progressed his game, essentially going to the collegiate level on one
year of high school basketball. With a lot of dedication to his post-game, he
was able to become an All-Conference player by the end of his senior year and
ultimately, a professional prospect in the European market.
Willis recently signed to the Duran International Sports Agency and is
scheduled to begin his professional career in Europe this fall. He says, “My
fundamental goal is to use the experience I will gain while playing overseas to
advance the basketball league in The Bahamas. I plan on paying forward all of
the knowledge that was given to me throughout my years in college, as well
as on the professional level. I believe it is my duty to help the next Bahamian
understand that anything is possible. All it takes is consistency and effort.”
Willis was conferred a Bachelor’s Degree in Forensic Accounting on June 9,
2019.
