Sizing Up Hard Drives

Behind the stage, companies such as Seagate have been pushing technology to the limit. According to an HWM Philippines interview with Mark Re, the Chief Technology Officer of Seagate, Seagate has always aimed to “improve the capacity of the hard disk drive.” With 4TB external hard drives already on the market, the trend points to bigger sizes. The bigger, the better, right? But we will insist that bigger capacities on smaller forms will steal the limelight in the next few years. We feature some of the top contenders on the external hard drive market:

Western Digital is a staple in the external hard drive market, with its trademark Passport line taking the stage. The My Passport Ultra ranges from 500GB to 2TB, which should be enough for your storage needs. It also offers USB 3.0 compatibility for fast transfer speeds, and it supports WD SmartWare, which allows you to set schedules for backing up your files.

Seagate is also a frontliner in the external hard drive market, and we chose the Seagate Wireless Plus because it’s cool - it allows for wireless transfer of files to any wireless communications-enabled device, which means you can sync files with your tablet or laptop on the go, and update your backup on the go as well. It has a 1TB capacity, standard for most external hard drives these days.
