e know Mother?s Day and
Father?s Day as the two days of the
year to celebrate and honor our
parents. We give them cards,
presents, and flowers. But how did
these two holidays come to be?
According to History.com, Mother?s
Day became an official U.S. holiday
in 1914. A woman by the name of
Ann Reeves Jarvis helped create
various clubs throughout the
1800's that involved mothers
gathering together. Many years
later, Ann?s daughter, Anna, strived
to make Mother?s Day a holiday
respecting the sacrifices mothers
make for their children. Eventually,
in 1914, President Wilson signed a
document stating that Mother?s
Day would be held each year on the
second Sunday of May. Fun Fa cts
Father?s Day became an official U.S.
holiday in 1972. In 1909, a woman
named Sonora Smart Dodd
attempted to make a holiday
similar to Mother?s Day for fathers.
She went to many places in an
effort to make her idea real. Finally,
her work paid off and her idea
became successful. Washington,
USA celebrated its first Father?s
Day on June 19, 1910. After a few
years, the presidents of the United
States got in on the holiday, too.
President Coolidge pressed
governments of the states to
celebrate the holiday in 1924.
Today, Father?s Day is celebrated on
the third Sunday of June. -
Even though
Anna Jarvis
helped create
Mother ?s Day,
she later
wanted nothing
to do with it.

In some
countries,
fathers are
celebrated on a
Catholic holiday
called, St.
Joseph?s Day.
