More specifically, as a former elite athlete, what will your festive season approach be to your kids’ nutrition?“ The keyword is balance and the‘ doing word’ is your own example. If sweets and all things‘ nice’ are forbidden, your kids will probably go in the opposite direction at the first opportunity. But if most of the time, mom’ s trying to be healthy, getting in some exercise, and is happy, your children are hopefully bound to say,‘ This looks like fun!’ They’ re also bound to reap the benefits, because you’ ll probably be more loving, kind and energetic when you continue to invest in the habits that keep you healthy, as opposed to fatigued due to forgoing all of your usual routine.”
Getting back to your running, will we ever see you making a return to professional road running?“ Decisions such as retiring from a pro sport are really hard – I’ ve been pondering it a lot, and discussing it intently with my husband
“ Retiring is not a word I like to use. It’ s more transitioning, or just focusing on other areas of my life as well.”
and family. Christiaan understands that my personality dictates that I put one hundred percent effort into whatever I do, because I’ m an‘ all-or-nothing’ type of personality. And the main reason for my decision is that my kids are getting bigger, and they’ re needing more of my mental and physical attention, so I just want to be there for them. I just feel that in our family environment, I can actually be more present when I’ m not training all the time, if that makes sense.”
“ Retiring is not a word I like to use. It’ s more transitioning, or just focusing on other areas of my life as well. Ultimately, it’ s a really tricky question whether I will return to pro running. I don’ t think there’ s ever a‘ never,’ if that makes sense. Right now, it’ s just a different season and I’ m stepping into it. Whether or not there’ ll be a spark re-igniting a return to elite running, is too early to say. If the spark returns, and my life structure allows for it, I’ ll answer that call. What I do know, is this: I love running, it’ s in my blood and part of who I am, so I will never stop running. I will never stop living the lifestyle of being outdoors, being in nature, just doing my thing.”
