Jack Kaufman

Former Professor of Education , Dr . Jack Kaufman , passed away March 12 . He was 85 .
Dr . Kaufman taught at Bluefield State for 34 years . According to his obituary on the Mercer Funeral Home website , he was born and raised in Sutton , WV , graduating from Sutton High School in 1953 .
He received his Bachelor ’ s in Music degree from Glenville State College and came back home to become the high school ’ s band director . He later did the same at Floyd County High School in Floyd , VA .
Jack earned a Master ’ s , then a Doctorate in Education at the University of Virginia .
In 1970 , he moved with family to Bluefield and began teaching at the College .
Again according the website obituary , “ Throughout his career he influenced hundreds of teachers , many of whom served in our local school systems . He was recognized for his many accomplishments … including the U . S . Jaycees War Memorial Fund Scholarship , the Harrison Ferrell Excellence in Teaching Award , and the Phi Delta Kappa Outstanding Educator Award .”
Jack was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and played in the East River Mountain Town Band for 21 years .|
He is survived by his wife of 63 years , Mary Alice McHenry Kaufman . Also daughter Pamela Browning and husband Todd , daughter Betsey Shaw and husband Mike , and five grandchildren .

Joyce Glass Brown

Joyce Brown , longtime employee of Bluefield State College , passed away March 29 . She served the college with distinction until her retirement a few years ago .
She was born August 15 , 1950 , at Peel Chestnut Mountain where she also passed away . She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years , Clyde . husband Keith , and grandson Conor McGlothlin . Also , sisters Janet Bowlick and Lisa Vanhooser .
She is survived by sons Steven and Clyde Robert , daughter Mary Beth McGlothlin and
