Catherine Harrison ( B . S , Social Science ; Class Valedictorian ). Masters of Education , Lindsey Wilson College , 2016 . Catherine has accepted new position as a counselor at New Beginnings Therapy Services . She had been a counselor with Bluefield State ’ s Student Support Services . She writes , “ I was a non-traditional student . I started college in my later twenties as a single mom , differently abled , with a low-paying job . I was nervous , unsure of my abilities . ( Director of Academic Success Center ) Carolyn Kirby and Student Support Services helped me believe in myself . They also taught me essentials like time management and effective note taking . Later , they showed me how to write an effective resume and interview etiquette .
“ As a counselor , I shared my story with other students in the SSS program . It really helps when I can tell them , ‘ I was there and I did it . You can do it , too .’ I had a lot of I-don ’ t-know moments . Carolyn always encouraged me . She was my mentor .”


Adam Umberger ( B . S ., Business Administration ). Adam is unofficially retired from his car racing days . The former Beckley Motor Speedway Rookie of the Year now works at the Cross Towner Barbershop in Bluefield .


Kimberly Keene ( B . A ., Humanities ). A veteran of AmeriCorps , Kimberly is now in the market for a teaching job , a search made more difficult by the pandemic . A resident of Iaeger , WV , she is a co-founder of Princeton Pride . She writes , “ My degree includes a concentration in English . Some of my favorite writers include T . S . Eliot , Virginia Woolf , Harper Lee and Maya Angelou . Since graduating , I had the pleasure of serving with AmeriCorps and the opportunity to give back to the community .
Bluefield State played a huge role in my service . The tutors at Student Support Services ( SSS ) helped me understand my classes better and challenge myself . SSS is more than a place to receive help . It ’ s a family that is there for you no matter what .”


Erik Guyton ( B . S ., Business Administration ). M . A ., Sports and Athletic Administration , Gonzaga University . Erik is a sports management professional currently living in San Francisco . He has worked in the NBA Summer League and also for the Memphis Grizzlies .


Mychal Guyton ( B . A ., Humanities ). Mychal is an accomplished film professional with production credits on many high-profile films including A Wrinkle In Time ( 2018 ). He is also Creative Executive for ARRAY , a Los Angeles-based distributor and promoter of films made by women and people of color .
