When Hamilton Hatter was named first principal of the newlyauthorized “ High Graded School ” for African-American children , the West Virginia legislature gave him $ 8,000 to work with .

Even in 1895 dollars this was not a lot of money . Hatter had to buy land , put up a building , hire faculty , and have enough left over to operate the first such school in southern West Virginia .
Thus , began a journey that has impacted the lives of tens of thousands of historically marginalized and underserved young Americans , Black and white .
It has not been easy .
