Shelia Johnson a true big blue

In 1975 the valedictorian of Montcalm High School had two choices for college : Concord College in Athens and Bluefield State College .
Shelia Curran Johnson chose the latter and made a decision that would stick for the next 45 years .
“ I chose Bluefield State because it was cheaper than Concord to start . It was only $ 190 per semester ! Then my scholarship made it even more affordable . Plus , it was closer to home .”
Shelia studied for her degree in business , adding concentrations in accounting and something relatively new , computer science .

In 1978 , she was elected Bluefield State ’ s Homecoming Queen . On January 1 , 1979 , she represented West Virginia at the Orange Bowl .
That spring she was elected president of the Student Government Association ( SGA ) for her senior year .
“ Campus was very active then . So was SGA .
Don Poe ( Class of 1979 ) and Johnathan Kidd ( Class of 1979 ) were a great help . We brought the R & B group Peaches and Herb to campus . They had a hit song , ‘ Reunited ,’ and we sold out the Brushfork Armory with a lot of help from our fraternities and sororities .”
Shelia got her B . S . degree in the 1979 and a year later started working as Bluefield State ’ s first ever accountant .
In 1980 , Shelia married her high school sweetheart , Cody Johnson . They had two daughters , Jessica and Sheena .
In 1995 she received the Bluefield State Foundation ’ s first ever Classified Employee award .
