Justice asked the graduates , “ If you ’ re at second base , or in right field , are you thinking to yourself ‘ Please don ’ t hit it to me .’ Or , do you say , ‘ I want the ball .’?”
He said , “ You have got to want the ball .”

Finally , he surprised the gathered by pulling out his baseball glove .
He used baseball as an example of the approach each needs to succeed in the game of life .
Pounding his mitt , the governor imagined a game in bottom of the ninth inning , Bluefield
State visiting and up by a run . The opponents have the bases loaded , two outs , with a 3-2 count on the batter . A base hit or an error will win the game for the other side .

He thanked everyone for the invitation to speak , saying earlier he hoped to return on September 4th for the first Bluefield State football game in more than forty years .
