Challenges graduates

West Virginia Governor Jim Justice ’ s speech to the Class of 2021 was a mix of praise and challenges drawn from his personal life .

He began by congratulating the Class for having persevered through numerous COVID-related challenges . He praised them for being part of “ the rebirth of this incredible institution , happening right before our very eyes .”
Sharing a few of his own experiences , he offered what contributed to his success . “ I believed in people . I believed in hard work . I believed in love . I believed in appreciation . I believed in values .”

The governor noted the rapid improvement in the College ’ s academic and financial standings . He called out the baseball team for having won the first-ever Black College World Series the day before . And noted how proud he was to have played a role in the return of campus housing after an absence of more than fifty years .
The governor also had some sobering words of advice . Even with degrees in hand , “ the

journey ahead is going to be plumb tough on each and every one of you .”
