The first results were modest . Enrollment for Fall 2020 increased 1 %. Nonetheless , during that pandemic-impacted year , Bluefield State was one of only three colleges in West Virginia to report an increase .
President Capehart then outlined steps taken from that point forward implementing an aggressive strategy to increase enrollment :
• Opened campus housing to freshmen for the first time in 52 years
• Added 13 new sports using Cares Act funding in a prudent and fiscally responsible manner
• Reinvigorated campus life and enhanced overall student experience
• Made a significant commitment to marketing with outstanding results
“ When we arrived at Bluefield State in January of 2019 , we found a situation in which the horizon of this campus failed to reach beyond the next day ...… Fiscal decisions were made on a day-to-day basis .”
• Prioritized expenditures for more efficient and effective campus operations
• Increased efforts to secure external funding through gifts , grants and government support , thereby keeping tuition and fees low
