Big Blues Sports The Trailblazer Award Harry “Big Jeff” Jefferson Blue & Gold athletes are accomplishing great things on and off their fields of play. Bluefield State competes in baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, golf, tennis and volleyball. In 2011 Bluefield State’s Harry “Big Jeff” Jefferson was honored posthumously with The American Football Coaches Association Trailblazer Award. This award is given to a “minority coach from a Historically Black College or University who had a profound impact on his student-athletes, institution, the coaching profession and the game of football in a particular decade.” Former basketball standout Jeff Mullins ’90 was recently inducted into the Cole Business School Hall of Fame. Read more about Jeff’s post-Bluefield State years here. Jefferson coached the national championship-winning teams of 1927 and 1928. He also coached teams in 1932 and 1933. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1981. The best are enshrined in our Sports Hall of Fame. The first were the 1927 and 1928 football teams which won two national championships under legendary coach Harry “Big Jeff” Jefferson. Check in here for more winning stories about Big Blues athletes. Cole Business School Hall of Fame Jeff Mullins ’90 has built a nationally recognized business. As a basketball player, Jeff was selected to the 1988 All-Conference tournament team. He also earned first team all-conference honors for the 1988-89 season. Bluefield State’s football team won national championships in 1927 and 1928.
