Sewing 101

Learn sewing machine basics in Pillow-Palooza while making an assortment of throw pillows that add comfort and pizzazz to any room’ s decor. Adding small pops of cute, colorful fabric plus some DIY panache can instantly transform a sofa or bed without a huge investment in time or materials. This absolute beginner class is also suitable for the returning sewist. Participants learn sewing safety, which sewing tools are needed, sewing terminology, how to read a pattern catalog and envelope, how to follow sewing instructions, and skills like measuring, cutting and straight stitching. Or, in Lounge Pants Party, you will learn to sew classic, cozy, lazy day pants. In addition to the previously mentioned sewing skills, you will learn to make a few changes to the pattern and be able to make them for nearly everyone in your life. The class also covers how to choose fabric, pin, cut, and sew a seam as well as seam finishes, hemming, and inserting elastic. Both beginner supply lists are available at the JRC Front Desk and online at bloomingdaleparks. org. A former school teacher, Instructor Peg Gradl has taught sewing to students of all ages for nine years. Believing sewing to be an art and a skill that challenges and provides comfort and fun, she enjoys“ bringing it all together so I can get that‘ Oh!’ from my students when they‘ get it!’”

Wine and Canvas Painting

Great for a Girls Night Out! Join us for an evening of canvas painting fun. Each participant is supplied with everything needed to create an acrylic, Valentine-themed painting on canvas. Bring an apron or old T-shirt as paints can stain. Step-by-step instructions are provided. To see the actual painting, email kbiggott1962 @ sbcglobal. net. Snacks and glasses also supplied. You bring the wine and friends. With an associate’ s degree in art, instructor Kellie Biggot has been in the graphic arts business for over 25 years, and has been instructing stepby-step acrylic paintings at parties for nearly two years.

Treat yourself after the holidays and create your own bath bombs and sugar scrub, along with creative packaging to keep it in. Or, create a collage canvas using more than one art medium. Come spring, you’ ll dive into soap making; mixed media jewelry making where you’ ll apply collage techniques to wooden scrabble tiles; and creating your own art journals. You will leave each class productively armed with goodies galore. Instructor Mary Kay Beck has been sharing her deep passion for arts and crafts with students of all ages for years. She specializes in mixed media art forms.

Make Your Own Spa Day allows you to pamper yourself and relax at home with a terry hair wrap, a soothing eye mask, a toiletries bag, and a microwaveable neck pillow you make yourself – all as you expand your skills on a sewing machine. Or, join the ecolology movement in Denim Do-Over and reuse and remake clean but used jeans, add some new fabric and embellishments, and refashion it all into a one-of-a-kind apron, bag and pillow. Both classes are intermediate levels requiring either a BPD Sewing 101 class or equivalent previous experience as a prerequisite.
