Block Home #2 | Page 11

The house was constructed in six days, plus one day for transport, by a local construction team of 12, starting on Sunday the 19th of December 2021. The design of Hariadi’s house was tailored to suit his narrow plot of land, which is approximately 3.5 x 10 metres. The family requested that we utilise the available space for two bedrooms and a living room only, without a kitchen and bathroom.

The design also needed to utilise the same recycled plastic blocks, roofing, ceiling, doors, and windows that had previously been used in a display Block Home, first at Lombok Airport and then at the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (DPU) in Mataram.

The first two days of work saw the foundations built and filled in and concrete floors prepared to provide a smooth, level surface for the blocks to be laid on. The third day was spent loading, transporting, and unloading the previously-used materials from Mataram.

On the fourth day, construction started on the walls. From the time the team started building with the Blocks, the home only took 4 days to complete. On the fifth day the walls were completed, doors and windows installed and frames for the roofing prepared. On the sixth and seventh days, the roof construction and ceiling installation were completed and the electrical cabling and lights installed, and the home was then complete.

During the construction we had the pleasure of meeting the family who has so generously donated the funds for this project; Corine, Marnix, and their four children visited the site to meet Pak Hariadi’s family and view their new home.
