E D U C AT I O N A L EXAMS By Cordelia Khosi STUDYING TIPS E xam time is around the corner and it is the most stressful time for students everywhere. You can be a top A student or a totally average student but it's no brainer how this time of the year puts its pressure on you. Well today I have a few study tips for you and I'm sure you know some of them, after all you have been in school for most of your life and sometimes no matter how much you study some tips just don't seem useful or helpful, so here goes: 1. Have enough time to studybreak down your time in-between activities. Don't study too much or too little in a short space of time but make it easy for yourself by studying in advance. Study chapter by chapter and be careful not to cram what you study but rather study to know and understand. 2. Use flow charts and diagrams- diagrams break down everything and make it easy for you to understand certain chapters and summarise your work into short and easy to understand sentences or even sometimes just one word. 3. Take regular breaks- don't spend too much time on your books. Usually when one doesn't understand a certain thing they dwell on it and study extra hard, don't do that. Take a short break and drink water and give your brain a bit of time to rest then get back to it. A 15 minute break will do you much justice. 4. Organise your study space- a messy study space makes you lazy and makes it impossible to concentrate because you find that there are many things on your desk and you end up playing with them. Take only what you will need and put everything else away. This helps with concentration. 5. Practice on old exam papers get old material on the subjects or modules that you are doing and use them. This helps with getting a break down on what the exams are like and what you can expect. Also use old assignments and use them to help with the study process. 6. Organise study groups or join one- this helps with getting new ideas and sharing of information. You can get a new perspective on certain topics and understand them better than you did when you are alone. Don't be selfish, go on and share your knowledge. 7. Snack on brain food and drink enough water- what we eat during study has a high impact on our focus and energy levels. Eat food like nuts, fish, yogurt and seeds. Also drink water. This will help on your concentration levels and memory. Also eat slow release energy foods on the day of the exam. Stay away from energy drinks and too much coffee. Use these tips every time you study whether it is for an exam or test or just general studying to understand certain chapters well and better. Good luck on your exams! BDM TALENT ISSUE #04 06
