B L I N K H O T TA L E N T MZANSI TALENT K WA I TO M U S I C I S OUR CALLING. TOO By Sharon Ndlovu By Barbara Mofokeng Kwaito is the first music genre they heard, filled with the vibe and rhythms. Plus it's a culture of the youth in Mzansi as a whole, kwaito talks about things around us and anyone can relate to every song. Thato and Thabang Pebane are the duo brothers called Tycoo, this name derived from the word 'tycoon'. The motive behind it is their passion of knowing the business side of the industry as most artists only know the entertainment side but not the business side. They started joining forces with their parents request then in 2004 Tycoo was born, in 2005 they met TJ Gomala who produced their 1st album under “Our Pride Record” recorded at “Silk voice Studio” titled “From nothing to something” that introduced them to other provinces and now with their track called “MonateThwaa” doing well on radio stations, they are very happy with their journey even its not easy. Thabang and Thato were born and grew up in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga; they come from an agricultural Family, fetching cows and goats is their lifestyle even now, that's why some people in the industry call them Kwaito Farm Boys, milking cows every morning is part of what made them strong. Their love for kwaito began when Thabang bought cassette by Authur OyiOyi in the nineties and Thato would listen to the top 20 chats in all radio stations. “We handle them differently as their specificity and making sure that we learn from those challenges and whatever decision we taking in handling them, makes it better than we were yesterday says Tycoo”. In 2003 Dj Calenda from Acornhoek asked one of them to perform as a singer, that's when everything started to change for Thabang while Thato was doing his own things aside. Apart from music, Thabang is studying at the moment as we all know that education is the key to success and in every aspect of life, education is needed. As for Thato is working at an institution called Mpumalanga Regional Training Trust (MRTT). Like normal people they do face challenges as a brand “TYCOO”. The message behind the song MonateThwaa is just to change the mindset of people about how they view Bushbuckridge, they just letting the nation know that even people in Bushbuckridge know how to party. People out there view Bushbuckridge as a place of witchcraft, which there's more activities and more fun which one can experience in Bushbuckridge. They are currently working on a new album.People should expect a unique sound, more collaboration and what they can reveal is that the album will be called “Ama Kwaito Chemical”. The name says it all that it will be a mixture and exciting album for people to look up to. Their advice to young people who wants to enter the music industry is that “They should be ready, they shouldn't be in the industry for fame and money but be in the industry for a good course of entertaining people, spreading words of wisdom, giving people good music. And they should work hard, be patient, respect and most importantly be themselves and be loyal to themselves. Remember being a musician is work so people should put food on the table and forget about fame. Says Tycoo” BDM TALENT ISSUE #04 27
