This can be either financial, or just about spreading information on what BLESMA does. Always sort out a budget before you start: will the event cost you anything up front? BLESMA can’t pay invoices for events so you’ll need to take any costs out of the money you make. This will also help to shape what takes place before, during and after the event, to ensure that your target is reached. ALWAYS TARGET THE RIGHT PEOPLE Ask yourself: who is the event for and how will they be invited? Can they bring anything with them (like cake) to help out? Choose the right people for the right job. Efficiency is key to avoiding doing things twice, so get bossy and organise your volunteers. Think about entertainment to bring an event to life (carol singers for a Christmas party, for example) and if you need any support, advice or merchandise to help to get your event off the ground, contact BLESMA’s friendly Community Team (below). you’re thinking of doing some fundraising, whether it’s a relatively modest local event or if you have more ambitious plans of, say, single-handedly circumnavigating the globe, here are Annette’s top tips for making sure your collection tin ends up chock full of coins… Meet the team Annette Hall Head of Fundraising 020 8548 3517 fundraising@ blesma.org GIVE YOURSELF ENOUGH TIME A very common pitfall is to underestimate how long things take to organise. Promote the event as early as you can. It’s always better to promote early and make changes later than to leave everything until the last minute. It’s also better to under spend rather than over spend the money you’ve worked hard to raise, so be strict with the budget. Have a running order on the day and stick with it, otherwise things can get away from you. be sure to cLEAR THE EVENT LEGALLY When organising an event outside private property, check with your local council to see if they have any restrictions in place. They’ll be able to tell you who to get in touch with to get any necessary permission. If you’re running something as part of a wider event, the people in charge will be able to tell you what you need. Finally, there are some restrictions around goods that are donated as prizes which you aren’t able to claim Gift Aid against. So double check that, too.
