HOW GREEN IS
OUR CAMPUS?
We all make big attempts in our day to day
life to be as environment friendly
as possible. But what about our
university? Are they being sustainable?
Many students spend a lot of their time
in school, especially when deadlines are
approaching. Therefore, they buy food at
the canteen, get drinks from the distributors
and, obviously, throw away their trash.
If you look around the campus, you can
see that recycling bins were implemented
which is a big step forward. On the other
hand, by just having a look in the canteen
you can notice the quantity of plastic used
to wrap paninis, along with the plastic containers
to put your salad in, at the buffet.
One more thing that should definitely be
changed is the plastic cutlery. They are
substituting it with compostable ones but
not around the whole campus, yet. Hopefully,
they will make sure to finish the job.
Another nice thing they implemented are the
water refill machines. They are a bit hidden,
but you can find them on every floor, and
you are able to choose between still,
sparkling or ice-cold water. Though, a
bit counterproductive is that there are
still plastic water bottles sold at the automatic
distributors. I guess it’s up
to the students to make the smarter
choice and always bring their own flask.
BUas gets another point for trying because
recently more veg options have appeared in
the canteen, which is amazing because more
and more people are stopping eating meat
for environmental reasons and they should
be allowed to also get their food while
atschool. Let’s check out some
suggestions on how to make school more
sustainable. From students, to BUas:
“There are a lot of revolting bins and
recently decomposable cutlery was i
ntroduced, however there is still a lot
of plastic used especially in the canteen
(for example the salad boxes). Plus, the
school should strive to incorporate and
use less animal products and promote
a more vegan friendly environment...”
“In terms of waste they are doing a good
job... But food wise there is not enough
for vegans and vegetarians... That’s lame.”
“They do their best but on food level, a
lot can be improved with more variety”
“The plastic could be replaced with paper or
wooden utensils. Waaay too much plastic.”
It is visible that BUas is trying to be
sustainable, even though there is still
much to do, we must appreciate the effort.
