Atharv Deshpande blazing away for Blacktown in Premier Cricket

with Matt“ Duck Man” Austin
Australian cricket is entering a period of transition. As some longserving stars approach the twilight of their international careers, the next generation is stepping forward. Among them is Blacktown’ s own rising talent, Atharv Deshpande— an opening batter with a relentless hunger for runs who is rapidly becoming one of the brightest names in Sydney Premier Cricket.

has made it impossible to miss. Last summer, he smashed 132 for Vic Metro at the U19 National Championships, then headed north in winter and peeled off twin tons in Darwin. Back home in Premier Cricket, he opened the season by helping Blacktown defeat Manly with 3 – 22 and then rewrote the club’ s record books with three centuries in three games, surging to the top of the Sydney runscoring tally.
This season alone he’ s piled on 783 runs at an average of 52.2, including a career-best 153 against Western Suburbs, 146 against Eastern Suburbs, and 102 versus Sydney University. He’ s now the fifth Blacktown player ever to carry his bat in First Grade, holds the club’ s highest limited-overs score, and sits fifth on the all-time list at Joe Macaleer Oval. Add six wickets to his name and the young opener is demonstrating value with both bat and ball.
Already selected for the NSW Blues Second XI and previously representing Victoria Metro in 2023, Atharv’ s cricketing education spans two systems junior pathways in India and structured development programs in Australia. It shows in his tactical maturity: patience at the crease, the ability to accelerate when needed, natural composure under pressure, and strong contributions in the field.
In an era where multi-skill players shine across formats, Atharv Deshpande is ticking every box. If his rise continues on its current trajectory, Blacktown supporters may well be watching one of Australia’ s future international stars in the making.

Kevin Betts Stadium upgrade benefits whole community with Matt“ Duck Man” Austin

Western Sydney’ s booming population has created an ongoing challenge for all levels of government to provide quality sporting infrastructure that serves everyone. In the 1980s, however, there were no accessible sports facilities for people with a disability anywhere in NSW. That changed when a determined group of Wheelchair Sports NSW / ACT members fundraised to build Kevin Betts Stadium( KBS) at Mount Druitt a purpose-built, inclusive indoor sporting venue that opened in 1986.

the region urgently needed venues for both wheelchair athletes and able-bodied participants. Since its opening, KBS has been managed by Wheelchair Sports NSW / ACT, through its Social Business, Adaptive Venue Management, with profits reinvested into programs and opportunities for people living with a disability.
With the Blacktown LGA population rising from 181,000 in 1981 to an estimated 438,843 in 2024, demand for inclusive multi-sport facilities has grown rapidly. The newly completed Kevin Betts Stadium Upgrade and Extension responds directly to that need and stands as a transformative investment in disability sport and community access across Western Sydney.
Home to Wheelchair Sports NSW / ACT and a range of user groups including the City of Blacktown Basketball Association the upgrade delivers two brand new indoor courts, doubling capacity for training, competition and community programs. The extension also introduces a suite of accessibility enhancements, including compliant bathrooms, dedicated accessible parking, a hearing loop system, high-performance cooling and improved amenities for athletes, spectators and support crews.
The $ 10.3 million project was jointly funded by a $ 5 million grant from the NSW Government’ s Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund, with Blacktown City Council contributing the balance. Council engaged Stanton Dahl Architects to design and deliver the expansion, ensuring the stadium continues to meet the diverse needs of its growing user base.
KBS is now positioned as a nationally recognised centre for disability sport, providing a state-of-the-art home for wheelchair basketball, adaptive sport programs and a broad range of local competitions. The facility also supports recreational basketball, volleyball, pickleball, roller derby, school sport, indoor soccer and community events.

Infrastructure upgrades include a realigned driveway, expanded parking, landscaping improvements and other ancillary works to improve overall accessibility, safety and user experience. Serving Mount Druitt for nearly four decades, Kevin Betts Stadium has long been regarded as the heartbeat of the community. Its mission remains unchanged: to change lives through inclusion, access and participation, giving local residents the opportunity to enjoy sport in their own backyard, and providing world-class facilities that truly belong to everyone.
