May is a month that brings both reflection and celebration, with two important dates on the calendar: the upcoming Federal Election and Mother’ s Day.
On 3 May, Australians will head to the polls to cast their vote and help shape the direction of our country. It’ s a timely reminder of the value of our democratic system— a right that many before us fought to secure. Whether it’ s your first time voting or you’ ve done it many times before, every vote counts. Taking the time to understand the issues, policies and candidates ensures we each play our part in building a better future. We encourage all readers to get involved, stay informed, and have their say.
A week later, on 12 May, we turn our attention to celebrating some of the most influential people in our lives— our mums. Mother’ s Day is a chance to pause and thank the women who give so much of themselves every day. Whether through kindness, guidance, strength or support, mothers shape our lives in countless ways. It’ s also a time to acknowledge others who take on nurturing roles— grandparents, carers, aunties and mentors— whose care makes a lasting difference.
In this issue, we are proud to mark two milestones: the 50th edition of our Blacktown publication and the 50th anniversary of the Blacktown Festival. Both are reminders of how far we’ ve come as a community and how much we have to celebrate. You’ ll also find stories from local voices and a round-up of exciting events taking place throughout the month.
