Each year on 25 April, Australia pauses to mark Anzac Day— a solemn and deeply significant occasion that reaches far beyond a national holiday. It is a day of remembrance, reflection, and reverence, honouring the men and women who served and sacrificed in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.
Anzac Day began as a tribute to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who landed at Gallipoli in 1915. What followed was a campaign marked by courage, endurance, and profound loss. Over time, the meaning of the day has evolved, yet the spirit of the Anzacs— their mateship, resilience, and quiet determination— continues to define the Australian identity. In communities across the country, dawn services, marches, and moments of silence unite generations. From schoolchildren to veterans, Australians gather not to glorify war, but to express gratitude and acknowledge the cost of peace.
This day also serves as a poignant reminder of our shared history with New Zealand, and of the countless stories— both heroic and tragic— that shape our nations.
As we reflect on Anzac Day, let us honour not only the fallen, but also those who returned, carrying with them the invisible scars of service. And may we continue to strive for a world where such sacrifices are no longer necessary.
