Acquapole – bringing fun to the pool

with Matt“ Duck Man” Austin
I’ m sure everyone has noticed the evolution of the fitness industry in Australia. Advertisements promoting various gyms, exercise routines, and even gymnastics and aerobics are everywhere in mainstream media. Unlike the good old days of Aerobics Oz Style in the late 80s, 90s, and 2000s, you can now put away your step and leg warmers and instead jump into the pool to try Acquapole.
What is Acquapole, you ask? Don’ t worry— I had the same question. Here’ s a sneak peek into this innovative exercise regime, which is about to take off in Western Sydney. The Sydney Gymnastic and Aquatic Centre( SGAC) at West HQ is redefining workouts with the launch of Acquapole, an exciting aquatic fitness experience making its debut in Sydney this February. Forget the monotony of the gym or swimming laps— Acquapole combines the resistance of water with the strength-building benefits of pole fitness, offering a workout that is effective, accessible, and, most importantly, fun.
Brad Vella, Aquatics Manager at SGAC, explained that Acquapole, originally designed in Italy, has become incredibly popular in Europe due to its ability to build strength, improve flexibility, and enhance coordination while remaining gentle on the joints.
“ It’ s a workout like no other, combining the strength-building benefits of pole fitness with the natural resistance of water for a full-body experience that’ s as enjoyable as it is effective,” Brad Vella said.“ It’ s perfect for anyone looking to try something new, from seasoned fitness lovers to those just starting their wellness journey. Acquapole brings a fresh and exciting approach to fitness for both enthusiasts and beginners alike. This is exactly what SGAC is all about— making fitness accessible and enjoyable for everyone.”
The introduction of Acquapole is part of West HQ’ s broader mission to bring cutting-edge fitness experiences to Greater Sydney. Acquapole is one of four innovative aquatic fitness programmes now available at SGAC, alongside Acquapole Boxing, Acquapole Elastics, and SAF AQUA Drums Vibes— each offering a unique and engaging way to exercise in the water.
West HQ CEO, Richard Errington, emphasised SGAC’ s commitment to redefining fitness, ensuring that its programmes remain relevant, enjoyable, and dynamic.“ That’ s why both SGAC and our One55 fitness centre continually evolve their programmes to make working out more rewarding by bringing fresh experiences to our members and the local community in Western Sydney,” Mr Errington said.
“ SGAC’ s Acquapole is a perfect example of how we innovate in fitness, combining fun and creativity in a new workout experience.” By offering world-class fitness options alongside exceptional dining and entertainment, West HQ continues to enhance what it means to be a comprehensive lifestyle destination in Western Sydney.
Instructor Amanda Finn provided me with a rundown of the sport. She and her fellow trainers— Marlee, Matt, and Kimberley— who all teach Acquapole at SGAC in Rooty Hill, absolutely love it. Amanda explained,“ There are classes for all ages, and the pole adds stability, allowing you to move your body in ways that a regular fitness class doesn’ t provide.” She assured me,“ It’ s not the pole dancing

that everyone imagines!” SGAC is currently the only venue in Sydney offering Acquapole classes, and it’ s an incredibly fun and refreshing workout. Each session provides a 45-minute splash of excitement. One of its greatest benefits is that it’ s low impact, making it perfect for those looking to stay active without putting stress on their joints. Moreover, it’ s an inclusive sport— whether you’ re a fitness pro, a beginner, or somewhere in between( even a washed-up old hobbler like myself), Acquapole welcomes you!

GWS Giants ready to take on AFL’ s best

with Matt“ Duck Man” Austin
The GWS Giants are set to make a strong impact in 2025 under the leadership of Adam Kingsley. After a commendable 2024 season, where they finished the regular season in fourth place behind the Sydney Swans, Port Adelaide, and Geelong, they edged out the eventual premiers, the Brisbane Lions, who overcame a poor start to the year to claim the AFL flag.
The Giants embarked on an impressive seven-match winning streak beginning in Round 17, securing victories against Carlton, Richmond, Gold Coast, Melbourne Demons, Hawthorn, Brisbane Lions, and Fremantle. However, they suffered a setback in Round 24 with a loss to the Western Bulldogs. In the finals, they led the Swans for the first three quarters, holding a 10.9( 69) to 7.6( 48) advantage, only to be overrun and lose 13.10( 88) to 12.10( 82). The following week, they

Despite the disappointment, the Giants remain a resilient team, with Kingsley focused on the future. A significant boost comes with the resigning of highly talented midfielder Finn Callaghan, who has committed to a fouryear, $ 4.5 million deal. Callaghan, who has worn the number 17 jersey for the past three seasons, is now one of the AFL’ s most sought-after players. The Giants boast strong squad depth, featuring key players such as Tom Green, Connor Idun, and Jack Buckley. Additionally, club captain Toby Greene will continue to lead the team in 2025.
The Giants have strengthened their squad with promising signings from the GWS Academy, including Logan Smith and local talent Josaia Delana, both set for their debut AFL seasons. Smith will wear the number 36 jersey, while Delana, a winger from Blacktown, will don number 38. Delana honed his skills playing school football in Blacktown, as well as with the Kellyville Magpies and the East Coast Eagles, before progressing to the VFL competition with the Giants in 2024.
The 2025 season has also seen the club secure additional signings, with Cody Angrove( signed until 2027), Oliver Hannaford( 2027), Harrison Oliver( 2027), Jack Ough( 2026), and Logan Smith( 2026)
joining the squad. The Giants have also acquired Jake Stringer from Essendon on a contract running until 2026. With a wellrounded and formidable list, the Giants are well-equipped to challenge the AFL’ s best. Their defence features experienced players such as Adam Kennedy, Josh Fahey, Harry Himmelberg, and key defenders Sam Taylor and Leek Aleer. Meanwhile, midfielders Lachie Whitfield, Josh Kelly, Callan Ward, Harry Perryman, and Sam Reid provide a dynamic and expansive playing style, supported by ruckmen Lachlan Keeffe and Nicholas Madden. Up front, the Giants possess an imposing forward line led by captain Toby Greene, alongside Stephen Coniglio, Brent Daniels, Blacktown local Josaia Delana.
