Michael Nash , P & C President at Schofield Public School .
by Lorna Gordon
For the past four years , Michael Nash has been a dedicated and passionate member of Schofield ’ s Public School ’ s Parents and Citizens ( P & C ) association . What started as attending meetings when his youngest son began kindergarten has blossomed into a fully-fledged leadership role , with Michael now serving as the P & C president .
Michael first stepped into the role when the previous president moved on as their child aged out of the school . With no one else volunteering to take on the responsibility , Michael saw an opportunity to contribute and stepped up to the challenge . Since then , he has worked tirelessly to ensure the P & C remains an active and valuable part of the school community .
Michael ’ s motivation for joining the P & C stems from a deeply personal place . Having spent many years in the navy , he missed much of his three older children ’ s school lives due to long deployments . After leaving in 2010 he transitioned to a career in accounting , Michael found himself in a position to dedicate more time to his youngest child ’ s education . Since COVID , he has been on a medical pension , which has given him the flexibility to be fully present and engaged in the school community .
The P & C plays a crucial role in supporting the school in numerous ways . From hosting fundraising events like cake stalls and school discos to organising BBQs for special events , Michael and the other members of ensure the school benefits from both financial and community support . While certain activities are designed to raise funds for the school , others — like Mother and Father ’ s Day gift stalls — are focused purely on fostering a sense of joy and connection among students and parents .
Beyond fundraising , the P & C is actively involved in decision-making processes within the school . The association has a say in policies related to things like mobile phone use , behaviour support , and school fees , ensuring that parents have a voice in these important matters . Additionally , P & C representatives participate in teacher interviews for open merit positions , helping to select highquality educators who will positively impact students ’ learning experiences . Michael also takes great pride in supporting teachers directly . Initiatives like providing grazing platters for teachers on World Teachers ’ Day are small gestures that go a long way in showing appreciation for their hard work and dedication .
For Michael , being involved in the P & C isn ’ t just about fundraising or meetings — it ’ s about making a tangible difference in the lives of students , particularly those with special needs . By advocating for the best possible educators and ensuring resources are available , Michael hopes to make a positive impact for all students , especially those who need extra support .
For parents of children at the school , the P & C is not just an organization — it ’ s a team of dedicated individuals working together to create opportunities , enhance learning environments , and foster a sense of belonging .
As the school year begins , Michael encourages more parents to get involved with the P & C .
“ The more support we have , the more we can give back to the school ,” he says . “ It ’ s a great way to be part of the school community , get to know other parents , and make a real difference .”
