Christmas , new year and Australia Day celebrations have come and gone but there are always reasons to get together with friends and family in the beautiful city where we live . Lunar New Year , 7 February at Doonside is always a colorful crowd pleaser and a delight for the senses .
On p19 our Mayor , Brad Bunting , encourages us to visit the Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre to see an extravaganza of artwork on show for this year ’ s art prize . There is a dazzling display of painting , photography , sculpture and more on show until 28 March - entry is free .
Lots of wins in this issue . A longserving school P & C president and a young woman who leads a charitable organisation , Pay It Forward Angels , are this year ’ s Blacktown City Citizens of the Year . Mayor Bunting said , “ Paul and Marion have been selfless in their efforts helping people going through hard times and by doing so have brought many more together ,” p12 .
Buses are a vital and economical part of our transport system here in the north west . Warren Kirby MP cites that massive improvements have been made resulting in “ connecting our community after 12 years of neglect ”. A multimillion dollar investment in the 2024-25 budget has seen many timetables double the number of buses , particularly at peak times , p17 .
Fancy playing beach volleyball with the feel of soft sand between your feet ? Sounds good but who in heck wants to drive to the northern beaches to play it ! So , another big win is the new stateof-the-art Beach Volleyball Courts at Glenwood Reserve , which opened at the end of last year . This exciting new facility will be a game changer for us , a community not traditionally associated with the game , p8 .
