Aussie Rules : North Melbourne won VFL Premiership , beating Hawthorn 19.8 ( 122 ) to 89.13 ( 67 ).
Baseball : Cincinnati Reds won World Series 4-3 over Boston Red Sox .
Basketball : Golden State Warriors whitewash Washington Bullets to win NBA Championship .

Rugby Union : Wales won the Five Nations Championship in beating Scotland in front of 104,000 fans at Edinburgh ’ s Murrayfield Stadium . The Sydney Championship was won by Northern Suburbs who broke Randwick ’ s stranglehold on titles .
Snooker : Welshman Ray Reardon , beat Australia ’ s Eddie Charlton 31-30 to win the World Championship .
Soccer : Derby County won English League Championship , two points clear of Liverpool and Ipswich City . West Ham won the FA Cup , defeating Fulham 2-0 and Bayern Munich won European Cup , beating Leeds United 2-0 .
Swimming : Jenny Turrall was the only Australian to win a gold medal at the World Championships , taking out the 800m freestyle .
Tennis : Australian Open singles were won by John Newcombe and Evonne Goolagong , Bjorn Borg and Chris Evert won the French Open , Wimbledon was taken out by Arthur Ashe and Billie-Jean King , and US Open singles were won by Manuel Orantes and Chris Evert .
In the Davis Cup Sweden beat Czechoslovakia 3-2 .
