The Independent team pass on our sincere condolences to the family of Tony Bleasdale OAM who recently passed away . He has led and championed causes for years in Blacktown City to make it a better place to live and work .
Such is the legacy of this great man that many pages of this edition are dedicated to him ; pages 4 / 5 in the Brad Bunting column , pages 6 / 7 as this month ’ s finest and with Hugh McDermott MP on p17 .
We welcome new mayor of the city , Brad Bunting and are confident that he will ‘ do the former mayor … proud ’ p4 / 5 . He encourages residents to get involved in local planning by visiting council libraries and having their say on the draft Budget and Operational Plan .
An interesting concept is discussed on p5 , where good drivers in the Riverstone Electorate are being rewarded for their safe driving through the government ’ s
BCI demerit point trial . Motorists are being rewarded for safe driving as opposed to losing points for bad driving .
On p19 Ed Husic MP talks about better school infrastructure in classrooms and playgrounds in five public school in Chifley enabled by the government ’ s School Upgrade Fund . Investment is also in place to fix targeted roads off Richmond Road .
The Blacktown City Festival was an immense success , p8 , and drew the biggest crowds since the pandemic . Around 30,000 attended the weekend event at Doonside , and the photos are testimony to everything medieval ! Knights and princesses in all their glory entered the Best Dressed competition , which had more entrants than previous years .
Our historian John Horne gives a fascinating history of the event , which started in1975 with a grant of $ 6,000 , it was known as The Crafty Bunyip Festival .
Until next month – keep warm .
