Celebrating Neighbourhood Centres Week and Volunteer ’ s Week 2024

with Warren Kirby MP
It ’ s a time to appreciate the amazing people who help our communities thrive ! Did you know May was a month dedicated to thanking those who make a difference through both Neighbourhood Centres Week and Volunteers ’ Week ?
Neighbourhood centres function as the heart of communities , fostering connections , learning , and a sense of
belonging through inclusive programs and shared spaces .
Northwest Community Services in Riverstone exemplifies this dedication . Founded in 1977 , by volunteers , it has weathered challenges and grown to offer essential services . Despite limited resources , the centre ’ s unwavering commitment ensures its operations continue and services expand .
The growing and diverse population
presents a complex tapestry of needs . Northwest Community Services acts as a catalyst , empowering new neighbours to integrate and build a cohesive community with existing residents .
They offer a range of crucial services , including support for families and communities and specialised programs for Aboriginal people , youth , seniors , and people with disability . They offer support through repeated disasters with compassionate and expert assistance in complex cases . By intervening early , they make a significant difference in the lives they touch .
Neighbourhood centres , and most community groups for that matter , thrive thanks to dedicated volunteers . Last month , we celebrated National Volunteer Week , themed Something for Everyone . Whether at a neighbourhood centre , sports club , food bank , or library , volunteers are the lifeblood of these organisations . They ’ re the essential glue that holds communities together , just like neighbourhood centres themselves serve as the heart of any locality .
I am deeply proud of the vibrant community spirit in the Riverstone electorate , where volunteers are integral to our success . From Northwest Community Services and our schools to the organising committees of events such as the Riverstone Festival and
Filipino fashion showcases , and the enduring presence of institutions like the Riverstone Junior Rugby League and Riverstone Netball Club with over 50 years of history .
Our community ’ s engagement is truly extensive . We also see burgeoning involvement in sports clubs like the Quakers Hill Tigers and Schofields Cricket Club , which are thriving due to enthusiastic participation .
Volunteers are crucial , managing tasks such as marshalling runners and timing events at Riverstone , Quakers Hill , and The Ponds Little Athletics , as well as supporting the Riverstone Swimming Club and meticulously setting up baseball diamonds at Stanhope . They also play vital roles in organising Probus gatherings , bolstering community welfare through groups like The Ponds and Riverstone Lions Club , and driving improvement initiatives with The Ponds Rotary .
It ’ s impossible to recognise every individual contributor , but the breadth of volunteer opportunities highlights the inclusive and dynamic nature of our community . Whether you choose to get involved or simply offer a word of thanks to a diligent volunteer , every gesture counts . Personally , I extend a heartfelt thank you to all our volunteers for their dedication and hard work .
