Ease back to school blues
Many parents of school aged children embrace the holiday season . It ’ s a time to relax , spend time with loved ones , and recharge for the year ahead .
On the other hand , returning to school after a long break can be stressful - but it doesn ’ t have to be .
If your child is in primary school , there are many different strategies you can use . Irwin Steyn , Principal of Mountain View Adventist College , encourages parents to keep it light and fun , but educational – build counting or reading into everyday activities such as going to the shops or cooking at home .
He also recommends leveraging free and public spaces such as the local library that typically have lots of activities on over the school holidays .
If your child is in secondary school ,
your approach might need to be a little different .
“ As children grow into young adults , they need to understand that it will have to be their own initiative to learn and grow ,” Mr Steyn noted .
The key advice to parents is to role model good behaviour . Ask , don ’ t tell – your child will be a lot more receptive to this technique .
Mountain View Adventist College offers a range of support services within the school environment , such as wellbeing coordinators , counsellors , and pastoral support .
“ We value a partnership between the parents , student , and the school . If in doubt , always reach out , so we can help support your child on their learning journey .”

Metella Road Public School students win share of $ 20,000 in classroom prizes
Year 5 students from Metella Road Public School , Toongabbie , have won their share of $ 20,000 worth of classroom stationery in a national school competition called ‘ Sticking Together ’, part of the popular Aussie of the Month primary school program , younger sibling to the Australian of the Year Awards .
The competition invited students to share how they stick together in their classrooms , school and community through words or photographs that reflect the Australian values of ‘ Fair go ’, ‘ Mateship ’, ‘ Respect ’ and ‘ Inclusion ’.
In their entry , they said ; “ Acceptance , perseverance and believing we are all important . Looking out for one another and knowing that we all matter ! Whether we are the sporting hero , debating champ , resident artist or the clever mathematician . From the crossing guard , to the cleaners and to our main focus …. The kids value one another . Know that a title doesn ’ t make us better than another . Accept people for who they are and look out for our mates . Making memories and sharing the ups and downs . Our school does all of this and more . Aim high is our motto and we all try to do this .”
