LOCAL LIFE

MAKE A DIFFERENCE : The Hive

by Lorna Gordon
The 2770 postcode covers Mt Druitt , Willmot , Lethbridge Park and Bidwell , and these communities have been the focus of The Hive , a charity organisation which is working with the local community to help all the children in the area thrive .
The organisation realised that many children in 2770 were starting school without having gone to a preschool or early childhood centre , something that has been proven to make the transition to school easier for children , so they decided to do something about it .
Since they opened in 2015 , The Hive have had a vision to get every child in the area having the best possible start at school , which they have done through a number of early intervention initiatives .
Their Check Up Before School ( CUBS ) program works with a child and family health nurse who visits local playgroups ,
schools and community centres to build trust and carry out vital early developmental screenings on children .
In Wilmot and Lethbridge Park a speech therapist and health linker ( social worker ) are also available to help families with allied health appointments or accessing the NDIS .
Understanding that preschool and early learning are vital to help a child start primary school well , The Hive brought in an early learning linker team . Their roles are community-based , and they go to community centres or homes to help families with any barries they might face accessing
The Hive is a community-based charity working to bring the community together and help children start school in the best way possible .
preschool for their children .
They help find the right preschool or early learning centre for the child ’ s needs and support with applications for childcare subsidies plus the paperwork which goes along with enrolment . They can even assist with the bond payments required for children to start at a centre .
The team encourage parents to help their kids to read by advocating the Dolly
Parton ’ s Imagination Library , which is a free resource . It sends children under the age of five a free book every month along with tips on how to share the book with the children .
Reading from an early age improves school readiness and is a great way for families and carers to bond with their children .
It ’ s not just the little children they want to help . The Hive hold after school and holiday activities for older children . They have hosted Cultural Voices forums to find out what people want to see happen in their communities to celebrate the diverse cultures .
They also offer free breakfasts , lunches and dinners , kids and family fun days and movie afternoons .
This fantastic organisation really is there to listen to , support and make this community thrive .
