THE POWER OF ... SERIES

The power of connection

by Lorna Gordon
Lockdown . The word still makes me squirm and I ’ m sure it brings up a strong feeling for you as well . One of the biggest reasons we found it so difficult was that being isolated , even for our own health , is challenging for a species that craves connection .
Connection is important to us on many levels , physically , spiritually and emotionally . We need other people , but why is it such a powerful drive for humans ?
Physical connection helps us to feel good by releasing hormones in our brains . When you haven ’ t seen your friends or family for a while , giving them a hug helps to re-establish that connection and makes us feel happy . Holding a small child ’ s hand makes them feel safe and secure , while touching someone when they are upset communicates empathy and can help to calm them down .
It ’ s not just through physical connection that we feel close to people , we are connected to our family and friends through culture and history , which are biological as well as social and physical . Our families help to teach us where we have come from and why we hold certain beliefs important , they pass on special things about our culture , like food , celebrations and history which shape us into the people we are .
When we are at work , school or college we feel connected to our peers
PODCASTS

Ologies

By Lorna Gordon
Did you know that Ferroequinology was the study of trains ( or iron horses if you look at the name ), or that the study of raccoons is called Procynology ? Nether did I until I started to listen to the Ologies Podcast with Allie Ward .
Allie studied science and film in college and has put them to good use in her career featuring in ‘ How to Build Everything ’ on the science channel and ‘ Brainchild ’, a science TV show for Netflix as well as many other shows .
She ’ s taken this love of science and entertainment and put them together in a podcast called Ologies which by sharing a common purpose – to do our jobs or learn the subjects we are studying . But work and school also fulfil an important social role . For children , it ’ s learning to interact with people outside of their families and having fun with other kids . For adults it ’ s the ‘ watercooler chat ’ and sharing of ideas face to face that was missed , which is why some people found working from home depressing and why our children struggled without their peers .
Spiritual and religious connections are important to human beings too , being surrounded by people who share the same belief system as you can be extremely comforting , especially in times of crisis , like what we have experienced over the last two years .
After lockdown , I think many of us are still a bit stuck in a rut when it comes to our relationships , so , instead of texting , why not call a friend or even better , arrange to meet up with them . Say hello to a neighbour and check in on the seniors in your life .
Connections make our lives better , it ’ s time to make the most of them again !
Ologies looks at the studies of different things , from squids to beer and everything in between .
looks at different facets of science each week . The podcast covers everything from spider webs to demons and all the things in between in a light hearted , but educational way .
The poddy has been going since 2017 and has something for everyone in it .
I loved the one about dogs ( cynology ) and microbiology which was all about the gut biome , did you know that 90 per cent of your serotonin is made in your gut ? And if you have anyone with ADHD in your family you MUST listen to Dr Russel Barkley ’ s episode which is amazing !
You can find Ologies in the usual places you listen to podcasts and at Allie ’ s website , www . alieward . com / ologies .

Stranger Things

In honour of the Netflix Original children , get the care and attention Series premiere of Season 4 Volume they deserve within the plot and 2 , I thought it would be fitting to do a they each add their own valuable review on one of my favourite shows , contributions to the show . They get Stranger Things . fully developed stories with their own
Inspired by top-secret CIA projects motivations , goals , and relationships . In like MK-Ultra or the alleged Montauk fact , you might find yourself caring for Project plus 80s horror films , Stranger the initial “ side characters ” more than Things is a supernatural , sci-fi horror the actual kids themselves . Plus , the show that centres around a group of character development in this show is children in the 1980s and their quest literally the best I ’ ve seen . for answers when one of their friends The horror portrayed in the show is goes missing . so unique and its 80s vibes are iconic , To be honest , if you haven ’ t heard making it very nostalgic for anyone of the Netflix phenomenon Stranger who was a teen in the 80s . However , it Things … you may be living under a generally evokes a sense of childhood rock . comfort in someone of any generation
American film and television or age . writers , directors , and producers , The The best part of Stranger Things is Duffer brothers , have possibly created its ability to successfully mix horror , one of the most iconic shows of the comedy , drama , and romance without century . I believe the characters are making the show seem too crowded or going to become household names as overwhelming to the viewer . It also has they are both familiar and relatable . the unique ability to juggle multiple Every character , including the storylines at once and maintain a siblings and parents of the main perfect balance of each .
It ’ s incredibly well thought out , with countless clues , Easter eggs , and connections that can be made throughout the series . No matter how insignificant details may seem , know that it was carefully planned and executed in a way that comes together in the end .
I consider it one of the most binge-worthy and rewatchable shows , getting better and better with each season . The show matures along with the kids and because of that , each season has a more terrifying , deadlier villain , making the stakes that much higher .
Obviously , I highly recommend this show to anyone who loves a bit of horror and a clever , well thought out story . In starting it today , you also get to binge-watch all four ( technically five ) seasons !
