Building a better , healthier future for Chifley

with Ed Husic MP
On 21 May , Australians voted for change . They voted for a government that will build a better future . They voted for an Albanese Labor government .
In the lead up to election day , I had a lot of conversations with locals at train stations and mobile offices across the Chifley electorate .
There was one thing that people kept bringing up : the importance of accessible and affordable healthcare . Our area has been putting up with health resourcing and infrastructure that simply hasn ’ t
kept pace with local needs for a decade or more .
For example , at Mount Druitt hospital , three in 10 patients requiring care within 10 minutes of arriving at the emergency ward miss out . In the Sydney Local Hospital Network - covering the eastern suburbs and inner city – that figure is much lower at close to one in 10 .
A new hospital at Rouse Hill was announced in 2017 , and is often mentioned by the Liberals when spruiking investments in the health system . Yet not a single brick has been laid for the facility and
construction is not scheduled to begin until next year . You will have heard a lot about Labor ’ s plans to protect and advance Medicare .
Access to quality healthcare is a right , not a privilege . Government must strive to ensure that health outcomes are every bit as good in Blacktown as in Bronte .
But while both the federal and state governments must do better , this isn ’ t a question of political point-scoring .
It ’ s about the wellbeing of our families and friends .
That is why I also applaud the NSW Government ’ s recent opening
of a children ’ s ward at Blacktown Hospital .
In his victory speech , Anthony Albanese spoke about the importance of finding common ground . I ’ m humbled to be reelected as the Member for Chifley and will work every day to make sure no one from the northwest is left behind .
Now it ’ s time to get back to work to build a better future for our community .

MESSAGE

FROM THE

MAYOR with Tony Bleasdale OAM Mayor Blacktown City

It was my privilege recently as Mayor to deliver Blacktown City ’ s 2022 / 23 Budget .
The record $ 809 million balanced budget has been delivered in the wake of the difficulties thrown up by COVID-19 , reduced council revenue , climate change , severe weather events and challenges of a population that will rise from 404,000 to an estimated 612,000 in 2041 .
Throughout these times , council tried wherever possible to support our residents and businesses .
During the epidemic , council waived a number of fees and charges , council negotiated rent relief packages , we kept our staff employed and maintained all our services .
Council lobbied the NSW Government to end the unfair curfews and ensured that our city had adequate vaccination services .
The Budget provides a massive injection to the local economy with a major capital works program of $ 284 million spearheaded by our transformational projects including the $ 34 million Blacktown Animal Rehoming Centre and the $ 100 million Blacktown Exercise Sports and Technology Hub in the Blacktown International Sportspark .
Council ’ s Budget also includes $ 160 million for new and existing roads , footpaths and bridges .
Council is investing in the health , education and wellbeing of our communities with $ 26 million allocated to our Kids Early Learning centres , $ 33.9 million dollars for our libraries , leisure centres , Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre , community centres and recreational facilities .
Residents love our city ’ s open spaces . We ’ ve allocated $ 45 million for parks , reserves , playgrounds and sporting fields . In addition to the record Budget , council delivered three major blueprints for our city ’ s future .
Our Blacktown 2041 strategic plan , 4-year Delivery Program and 10-year Resourcing Strategy , will guide council ’ s operations over the next 20 years . These are not “ Council plans ” - but plans and strategies shaped by the opinions and feedback provided by the community .
As we enter the first year of our new 4-year Delivery Program , guided by Our Blacktown 2041 , I am confident we will deliver a safe , modern and welcoming multicultural city for our residents and a magnet for sustainable economic growth for our businesses .
