It ’ s festival time in our city this month . No less than 16 days are packed with major community events that have thankfully returned to bring excitement and fun back into our social lives .
We are so spoilt for choice , you will have to mark these dates in your calendar so you don ’ t miss any .
The Riverstone Festival and night markets are both on 14 May ; Sydney Zoo ’ s ‘ Something Dark ’ is being held for three weeks commencing 13 May ; the Autumn Harvest Festival at Rouse Hill Estate is being staged on 15 May ; the inaugural Outback Blacktown Country Music Festival headlined by Melinda Schnieder , Mark Gable and Amber Lawrence is on 15 May at Nurragingy Reserve ; a seniors gala concert with String Diva and A Night of Stars hits Workers Club stage on 17 May ; the awesome Medieval Fayre and Banquet is being held in Nurragingy Reserve 21-22 May ; national Sorry Day ceremony is at Nurragingy Reserve on 26 May ; Sweet Indulgence Dessert Festival
BCI drops into the CBD ’ s Village Green also 26 May ; the night time FAM Fest ( Food , Art , Music ) is on in the CBD on 27 May and Streets Alive and Parade Day hits the town centre on 28 May .
Of course we also have Mother ’ s Day on Sunday , 8 May , which was first celebrated here in Australia in 1910 , according to the National Library of Australia . Gift giving became the norm from around 1927 when charitable items including soap , lollies , hairpins and scarves were donated at the Feminist Club in Leichardt for lonely and elderly mothers who ’ d lost sons and husbands in WWII .
This special day honours the best mother who ever lived – yours .
If you ’ re lucky enough to have your mother in your life , as I do , make sure you send her love and thanks on a day which recognises the importance of her role in the family , community and to you .
Happy Mother ’ s Day to all our readers who are mums , grandmothers and motherin-laws , we hope you get spoilt .
