Mt Druitt Hospital

STOPS COVID severity

$ 1m jackpot for Kings Langley grandma

A new clinic treatment dispensed at Mount Druitt Hospital is reducing the severity of COVID-19 in adult patients .
STOPS – Sotrovimab Treatment in an Outpatient Setting , is a monoclonal antibody treatment given to people who have contracted mild to moderate COVID-19 and are at greater risk of it developing into a severe illness .
Patients with underlying medical conditions as well as Mount Druitt ’ s high population of Aboriginal people are benefitting from the treatment .
Catherine Dennis , 51 , was the first patient to receive the new , potentiallylifesaving treatment at the STOPS clinic in Mount Druitt Hospital .
“ When I was diagnosed [ with COVID-19 ], I was scared I was going to die . I no longer have this fear ,” said the Mount Druitt resident , whose family has also been diagnosed with COVID .
“ I have diabetes and heart problems and I am also an Aboriginal woman . I was at risk of ending up in hospital but now
A new treatment keeping vulnerable COVID-19 positive patients off ventilators and out of hospitals . that I ’ ve had this treatment , I ’ m feeling uplifted .”
WSLHD chief executive , Graeme Loy , said the STOPS clinic offers western Sydney a new way of treating COVID-19 for the most vulnerable in the community .
“ I ’ m proud of how the team at Mount Druitt Hospital responded so quickly to get the STOPS clinic established to deliver this vital treatment to community members with COVID ,” he said .
Acting deputy director of nursing at Mount Druitt Hospital , Kirsty Wallis , said the clinic is vital for keeping at-risk COVID patients off ventilators and out of hospitals .
To be eligible for the Sotrovimab treatment , patients must have had a positive COVID-19 test within the last five days , be aged over 55 , have one or more risk factors such as diabetes , obesity , or moderate-to-severe asthma and are being managed in the community .
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with COVID aged 35 or older are also eligible .
COVID-19 patients are triaged by nurses based on clinical need after their diagnosis .
She didn ’ t think it was real at first , but one lucky Kings Langley grandmother is now $ 1 million richer after winning Lotto .
“ Oh my ! I ’ m so overwhelmed . I thought it was all a dream ,” she said when officially told of her windfall .
And it was a bittersweet win too , as the grandmother had been playing her husband ’ s numbers religiously since his passing 25 years ago this month .
“ He ’ d always purchase an entry into Monday and Wednesday Lotto . I thought I ’ d keep the numbers going ,” she said . “ He must be looking down on me . “ My son and I checked the numbers after dinner . We couldn ’ t believe it . We didn ’ t know if it was true . We were up until 12.30 am , pacing up and down … it was a sleepless night .”
The Blacktown City resident held one of the three division one winning entries nationally in Monday and Wednesday Lotto draw 4123 and took home $ 1 million .
Her winning marked
18-game entry was purchased at Kings Langley Newsagency in Kings Langley Shopping Centre .
When asked how she planned to enjoy her million-dollar fortune , the winner said she ’ d be sharing it equally with her son .
“ I ’ ve always wanted to help my son and set him up . He ’ s my main priority . I ’ d like to put [ my half ] towards investing in more shares .
“ Funny story my son [ recently ] said we should buy two televisions . I said we have good enough televisions , we don ’ t need another one .”
This year , Lotto has created 18 division one winners in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains – collectively worth more than $ 30 million .
