“ African-American men and women still can ’ t settle on being average . We ’ ve got to be better than the next person , so that means projecting your best and learning to communicate effectively with adults , without the colloquialisms . We [ as parents ] should also strive to teach our children , from a very young age , about eye contact , a strong handshake and even speaking well over the phone . Not with ‘ uh-uh ’ or ‘ yeah ,’ but with proper and polite words such as ‘ Yes , Sir ’, ‘ No , Sir .’ It goes a long way because most kids primarily hang out with other kids . But who are they going to be working with ? Other adults . And if those adults see that you ’ re carrying yourself well , that ’ s who they want to mentor to and intern with . Young people like them will also make that company look good in the process .”
