Many people think of wellness only in the physical terms (nutrition, fitness, stress reduction) but it should be looked at as a multidimensional concept, incorporating the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of a Human Being. In today’s society wellness is categorized under the “treatment paradigm” that conveys a message of overcoming, rejecting or fixing a (dis-ease); when it should be actually drawing attention to an aspect of life that needs healing. When we look at wellness in the way of healing we then shape the “wellness paradigm” to empower individuals to continue developing their unique potential as human beings.In the black community we should focus on the healing side of our past in order to reach our full potential in the future. Healing from the trauma of slavery is a multifaceted process; for it involves the post traumatic disorder of how we eat, our fitness, mental stability, self-preservation and ability love. The wellness of our community cannot be addressed in any meaningful way unless viewed within the context of the prevailing consciousness of our world. The impact of this consciousness is universal, manifesting in every realm of our society: the medical, economic, environmental, psychological and the spiritual     MAGAZINE  as stated by John Travis in his article of wellness. Authentic well-being requires bring to the forefront the underlining self-destructive attitudes and behaviors that are uncontrolled throughout society. We must take accountability for our actions and the action of others if we want our community to restore to health. The starting point for changing the discountability to accountability is addressing the underlying causes of dis-ease with a more conscientious assertion than a symptomatic relief.So what is wellness? To Black Gainsters, it is the integration of body, mind and spirit towards the goal of optimal health. We will focus on the loving acceptance of yourself, the channeling of energies, developing awareness that there is no endpoint to health and happiness and a lifestyle of achieving your highest potential for well-being.
