The theme for this month is Black
Fatherhood Interrupted. Here we
examine three ways that the active
engagements between Black fathers and
their children are broken, sometimes
temporarily and other times
permanently. Fully understanding
there are more than three ways that
Black fatherhood is interrupted, we cover the murder of civil
rights heroes, economics and incarceration and the role they
played in erecting barriers between Black fathers and their
children.
In our Reader’s Speak section, we hear from two people,
one a father who discusses his view of fatherhood and another,
a daughter who lovingly recalls two special moments with her
father. Next, we briefly describe the horrible conditions of
what it was like to be an enslaved father.
Our A Most Interesting Black feature highlights the
achievement of Onesimus, a slave who helped to introduce the
medical procedure of inoculation to the American colonies.
Lightening things up, we showcase popular movies featuring
AfricanAmerican dads and then we identified songs for our
fathers. We conclude this edition with Honoring Our Living
Legends where we celebrate six living AfricanAmerican heroes
and heroines.
This is just a reminder of why this magazine exists. Our
number one purpose is to build up a scholarship fund for
AfricanAmerican students attending college. So, while we
enjoy bringing you relevant and interesting content each
month, we don't want you to lose sight of how you, our
subscribers, can help Black students afford college.
We'd love to hear from you. Give us a holla to share
your thoughts and opinions or simply to introduce
yourself.
