editor’s note Today’s startups will redefine the tomorrow’s India The dreams of billion dollar industries, trillions of jobs, and ground breaking technologies of future will only be fulfilled by fresh ideas and not the old stagnated corporates. The more empowered startups today mean more outcomes tomorrow. If we as a nation can waste millions of rupees in the useless show offs, we can surely fund startups who are putting their energies to do something good for the society. The risks taken by the new age entrepreneurs are immense. Most of them come out of their comfort zones and struggle to survive without support. It is not always the money that drives them to do unusual things. So, encouragement too should be extra-ordinary beyond the bureaucratic unending paper work. The day we democratize the system and come up with something unconventional, only then will the big touted programs achieve any success on the ground. A robust feedback system where all startup funding aspirants are given a chance to put their views is necessary. There is a need to move beyond traditional ways of funding. Can we have a startup ministry that is dedicated to the startup ecosystem and funding? Why doesn’t the national government create an open innovation fund where corporates donate money with tax benefits to them? The existing nodal agencies for each sector could be given more autonomy. The current startup special edition of Biovoice eMagazine includes the cover story, ‘The Startup Factor’ that looks at the importance of startups in expanding the bioscience sector. The ‘Face to Face’ section features an exclusive interview of Dr Taslimarif Saiyed, Director and COO, C-CAMP, Bangalore, where he shares insights on the startup ecosystem in India. The ‘BioChat’ has Dr Vijay Chandru of Strand Life Sciences talking about the new innovations by his company. The Special Interview features Dr Ram Sagar Misra, the researcher who claims to have discovered a non-GM approach to increase crop yield. From this issue onwards, we have launched a new section, the ‘SPECIAL STARTUP SERIES’ that will feature two fresh startup stories every month.
