India ’ s innovation ecosystem remains under-utilized

Despite a strong network of research institutes and enormous number of published research papers , India still lags behind on innovation scale in terms of world-class product development . If we look at the healthcare space , doctors rarely indulge in research activities or sharing inputs for product betterment . They don ’ t have much inclination towards analyzing the huge sets of data that get collected due to their patient interactions and treatment procedures . That surely needs to change ! In agri-technology , there are hundreds of challenges that could be addressed through study of vast data around various factors and then creating innovative products . Availability of enough funds both public as well as private ; improved access to technology ; less bureaucracy ; flow of knowledge and information ; and above all encouragement from policymakers is what will drive the innovation engine 2.0 .
While we often hear stakeholders talk about the need for an increased number of public private partnerships , the situation is different on the ground zero . The quality of collaboration that often depends on sharing of data and technology often lose steam due bureaucratic impediments and cumbersome processes . At the same time , development of bioclusters at a few strategic locations has given a lot of hope for such partnerships . The presence of both bioscience companies as well as academic institutions on the same campus have opened up better avenues for joint product developments in a few specific cases .
Human resources are an important part of the ecosystem and critical for the success story . In this context , we have compiled a list of India ’ s brightest innovators within the bioscience space and tried to put a spotlight on their achievements . The list surely is not an exhaustive one but certainly a mark of respect for the scientist and innovator fraternity . They give a lot of hope to the next generation of scientists with deep aspirations for doing science in India . Their role is of the torchbearers who despite hassles have stayed put and given outstanding results . In this issue , there are many other stories including an interview with a foreign innovator , expert insights by industry stalwarts and startup special that features a unique digital healthtech company .
Our team continues to strive for excellence and we are open to new suggestions or creative ideas . We look forward to your collaboration and support .
Have a great month and year ahead !
