editor’s note Bridging the industry-academia gap! Historically, the relationship between corporate sector and academic circles has been mostly of a love hate one. Blame it on the mismatched expectations from each other, the wavelengths haven’t quite reached to the levels of broader understanding. However, it goes without saying that the progress has accelerated in recent times due to the bio-clusters and lot many academics turning to entrepreneurship, leading to more interactions. Apart from that the technology transfers too have picked up slightly. Yet, it is not at the level where it should have been. The top solution that emerges from my discussions with the prominent scientists and policymakers is the encouragement of direct communication between industry and academia. The engagement must be more at the level of mid and lower level scientists who are deeply involved in the day to day research activities. The bureaucracy and technicalities of course will be a major hurdle but then if the gap has to be bridged, these will have to take a backseat. In line with the above comment, the current edition features ‘Face to Face’ interview of Dr Anil Wali, Managing Director, FITT, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) who shared his frank views on the innovation, technology transfer, current startup ecosystem. The ‘Cover Story’ this time features the impact of the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India. The Biochat features Dr Ravi Gaur, Chief Operating Officer, Oncquest Laboratories who shared his thoughts on the company’s latest activities, overall trends in the industry and policy. Our new section, the ‘Special Startup Series’ has been continuously receiving overwhelming response. This edition features a fresh story on the Pune based startup, Orthocrafts Innovations that has been developing an indigenous product portfolio of medical implants using bioabsorbable polymers and their composites.
