cause inflammation in brain tissues , leading to more serious conditions such as encephalitis . We need to be vigilant and monitor patients closely , particularly those who present with neurological symptoms , to ensure timely intervention . The neurological impact of Mpox calls for the need for a multidisciplinary approach in managing the disease .”
The key triggers
Given the current situation , experts are calling for a multi-pronged approach to prevent the spread of Mpox in India . This includes public awareness campaigns , vaccination drives , and strengthening the country ' s healthcare infrastructure to handle a potential outbreak . India needs to act swiftly to set up isolation wards , train healthcare workers , and stockpile essential supplies such as personal protective equipment ( PPE ) and antiviral medications . The experts emphasized that early detection and isolation of cases will be key to preventing the virus from spreading .
Prof . Ashok Rattan , Lead Advisor Medical Commitee & Quality at Redcliffe Labs belivges that antiviral therapies and vaccines play distinct yet complementary roles in managing mpox infections . “ Antivirals are used to treat individuals who have already contracted mpox , particularly in cases of severe disease or among high-risk groups . The primary antiviral agents include tecovirimat , brincidofovir and cidofovir . Tecovirimat is the most commonly used due to its specific activity against orthopoxviruses and favorable safety profile . While antivirals have shown promise in laboratory settings and animal models , their clinical efficacy in humans is still under investigation .”
Dr P . Vishnu Rao , Apollo Hospitals , Jubilee Hills , Hyderabad opines , “ The risk of a major outbreak in India could increase if public health measures are inadequate . Vigilance , proactive public health strategies , and robust screening for international travelers are essential to minimizing this risk . The preventive measures could include avoiding contact with infected individuals and animals , especially rodents ; using protective gear and isolate patients with suspected symptoms ; practicing good hand hygiene ; handling animal products cautiously and ensure meat is thoroughly cooked ; an d high-risk individuals should consider vaccination , particularly those in frequent contact with potential carriers .
“ Treatment options could include providing symptomatic treatment for fever and pain management ; ensuring adequate hydration to prevent dehydration ; administering antiviral medications as prescribed by the treating doctor ; hospitalization may be necessary for respiratory issues , secondary infections , or worsening symptoms ; and patients should remain isolated until all lesions have crusted over , typically taking 2-4 weeks ,” adds Dr Rao .
