India is fast becoming a major hub of lifestyle-related diseases as the growing affluence , especially among the middle-class , is leading to significant lifestyle changes and food habits . Most common lifestyle diseases found in the country include obesity , type-2 diabetes , hypertension , high cholesterol , fatty liver , cardiovascular disease , stroke and polycystic ovary syndrome ( PCOS ).
In a study , the Harvard School of Public Health has estimated that in India the economic burden of noncommunicable diseases ( NCD ), which include lifestyle diseases , will be a whopping $ 6.2 trillion during 2012- 2030 . The report added that ischemic heart disease ( coronary artery disease ) is going to be the single-most costly NCD in India , causing an output loss of $ 1.21 trillion during the period , followed by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ( COPD ).
Further , a significant number of the diseases have a genetic element . Researchers have found a strong link between genetic characteristics and many lifestyle diseases . One ’ s family history can amplify the risk of developing serious health problems such as heart ailments , diabetes , hypertension , some types of cancers , and obesity . If your close relatives have a history of such diseases , you are more likely to inherit them .
