Sélin was able to gather a group of talented musicians to bless the
final day of showcases with his unique island rock. And it was well
received; getting praise from local reggae stalwart David Kirton, and
Ché Pope, CEO of Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label. “They gave me
solid advice and I appreciate it tremendously. It was the experience
of a lifetime. I’m just extremely grateful.”
Determined not to let his dream die, he is already looking to the
future. “I’ll try to attend SXSW [a music festival in Austin, Texas] and
Canadian Music Week just to get a taste of what’s out there.” He also
plans to deliver an EP in the summer, filled with island rock - a genre
he is determined will make waves in Barbados and the Caribbean.
“Ten years from now I hope that other bands are doing the island
rock thing. From all across the Caribbean, not just Barbados. I hope
that it explodes sort of like how reggae had an explosion on to the
popular music scene.”
It’s clear that even though he has his eyes set on the international
market, the 21-year old is still determined to make a difference here;
fighting those who are musically stubborn and dismiss the idea of
trying something new.
“Rock music is here to stay,” he argues. “It’s not just about ‘devil
music’, it’s actually good quality music with good, strong lyrics. It’s
not just screaming; it’s more than that.”
